Mother Angela Gillespie was greatly respected within and outside her congregation. During the Civil War, she and her sisters were found in every army and battlefield in the West. She established field hospitals as well as several permanent hospitals, and her influence in Washington was powerful because of both her family connections and the recognition of her work for sick and wounded soldiers. At times, when generals failed to secure needed aid, she made quick trips to Washington and the aid was forthcoming.
