Allen Pond Park
Nature
Allen Pond Park in Bowie, Maryland, is a multi-use public space built around Allen Pond, a man-made lake created by farmer James Allen on land where his family once raised cattle and tobacco. Allen used the pond as a fishing attraction before selling the property in 1965 to Levitt & Sons, with the wish that the pond and surrounding land be preserved for community use. Today the park blends woodland, water, and recreation facilities, including trails, playgrounds, sports areas, an ice arena, an amphitheater, and accessible amenities. It reflects Bowie’s change from farmland into a planned suburban community.
