George Veenker, born in Ashton, was a veteran of World War I as a pilot and became a well-known Iowa State University coach. Emma Schweer, born in Ocheyedan, became a pilot and later trained World War II pilots, and she lived to 105 years. Leland Zahn, from Harris, served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was killed in action in Vietnam on 4/5/1967. The national bird and Old Glory also appear here.
