The Old Stone House is the oldest stone house in Monongalia County. By legend it was built by Jacob Nuze on original lot 25. It was sold in 1795 to tavern-keeper Henry Dering. From 1800 to 1813 it was owned by potters John Thompson and Jacob Foulk. It was then bought by Joseph Shackelford, who operated a tanyard here for 50 years. A minister, he led the first Methodist reform movement in the area, and the first Methodist-Protestant Church was formed here in 1830. In 1895 it was sold to Frank Cox and George Baker and was used as a dwelling and tailor shop. In 1935 the Morgantown Service League occupied it and restored it to near original condition for use as headquarters and shop. The house was donated to the League by Cox heirs in 1976.
