Born in Battenheim, Alsace, on April 23, 1813, Father Franz Joseph Rudolf was the founder of the Village of Spires, was appointed pastor in 1844, built the stone church in 1845, founded the convent of the Sisters of St. Francis in 1851, served as a civic leader and missionary in the area, and was buried below the church sanctuary on June 1, 1866.
