In the Mount Rose section of Hopewell Township, New Jersey, this 1.3-acre archaeological site preserves the remains of a rural distillery complex tied to cider milling and fruit-based spirits production. The complex included the Mount Rose Distillery, or Cider Mill, a two-story brick building constructed around 1875 for storage and administration. Operated by local families including the Drakes and the Stouts from the 1840s into the 1920s, the enterprise produced peach brandy, apple cider, and apple whiskey. The site is significant for what it reveals about a once-common rural industry and New Jersey’s history of cider milling and distilling.
