In March 1932, Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr., the 20-month-old son of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, was abducted from the family home, Highfields, in East Amwell, New Jersey, and later found murdered nearby. Investigators focused on evidence including a homemade wooden ladder, a ransom note with distinctive errors and symbols, and recorded ransom money, but found no usable fingerprints or footprints. The investigation drew intense public attention and involved local, state, and federal authorities. In 1934 Bruno Richard Hauptmann was arrested, convicted in 1935, and executed in 1936, though his guilt remained disputed. The case became one of the most famous crimes in American history and helped spur the Federal Kidnapping Act.
