The Battle of Iwo Jima was fought by the United States and Japan from February 19 to March 26, 1945, during the Pacific Campaign of World War II. The U.S. invasion, known as Operation Detachment, aimed to capture the airfields on Iwo Jima. On February 23, 1945, atop Mount Suribachi, the first U.S. flag raising involved Hank Hansen, Boots Thomas, John Bradley, Phil Ward, Jim Michels, and Chuck Lindberg, and a second raising involved Ira Hayes, Franklin Sousley, John Bradley, Harlon Block, Mike Strank, and Rene Gagnon. The conflict also honors the service of all U.S. armed forces who served there and remembers veterans listed by name.
