Bear Lake State Park occupies the north and east shores of Bear Lake in southeastern Idaho near the Utah and Wyoming lines. Established in 1969 through Idaho land purchases funded by the Recreation and Public Purposes Act, it includes two units, one of them still leased, with long beaches, broad swimming areas, and gently sloping shoreline. The lake’s distinctive turquoise-blue color comes from suspended calcium carbonate, helping make the park one of Idaho’s better-known lakeside recreation areas. It also offers camping, winter ice fishing during Bonneville cisco runs, and habitat for fish, moose, deer, pelicans, cranes, and cougar.
