Minnetonka Cave is a limestone cave in Idaho’s Cache National Forest above St. Charles near Bear Lake. Among the larger limestone caves in the state, it is open for seasonal guided tours along a public route of about half a mile, where visitors pass stalactites and stalagmites in a constant forty-degree environment. Its name arose from a misunderstanding of Mni Tanka, from a Dakota, Lakota, or Nakota dialect meaning “big” or “large water.” The cave also serves as an important hibernaculum for five bat species, including the Townsend’s big-eared bat, so protections and restrictions help guard against White-nose syndrome.
