North Dumpling Light stands on North Dumpling Island in Long Island Sound near Fishers Island, New York. Authorized in 1847 after debate over whether one light or two smaller ones should serve the area, the station was first completed in 1849 with a keeper’s house and octagonal tower. Its early history included a dispute over fog-signal pay that led to installation of a government fog bell in 1854. The light’s lens was upgraded in 1855, and the lighthouse was rebuilt and relit in 1871 with a taller tower and mansard-roofed house. Deactivated in 1959, it was later restored to the original stone tower in 1977.
