A small pioneer community settled this area in the early 1880s, and this cemetery is all that remains of it. The name Spruce Creek appeared on maps as early as 1859 for the creek winding through the area, although Orange and Oriana were also used as alternate names. In 1909, Spruce Creek was formally adopted as the community’s name. By then, the community had a community house, sawmill, church, two cemeteries, and a one-room schoolhouse. Fifty-six United States military veterans are buried in this cemetery, with service records spanning the Florida Seminole Wars, Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf. Civil War veteran John Allen Jackson has the earliest recorded grave. Families living in Spruce Creek in the 1900s included the Bennetts, Chandlers, Fairs, Johnsons, McDaniels, Prevatts, Selfs, Sparkmans, and Yelvingtons. Eugenia Fair was the schoolteacher, and her husband Andrew was a watchmaker. Other notable residents included George Self, a minister; LaFane McDaniel, a butcher; Simmons Bennett, a carpenter; George Prevatt, a watchman; and John Yelvington, a steer raiser. Descendants of the original pioneers still live in Spruce Creek.
