Circa 1930, the corner of East Main Street and North Clayton Street, once part of the public square, had become the site of a filling station built in the early 1920's as cars replaced the train as a mode of transportation. The station served as a local gathering place where men caught up on the news and loafed in front of the pot-bellied stove. Today, the site is the parking lot in front of the mural.
