Echo Mountain is a promontory in the San Gabriel Mountains above Altadena, formed from an alluvial fan between Rubio and Las Flores canyons and named for the powerful echoes heard across Castle Canyon. During the Mount Lowe Railway era, visitors used “echophones” at favored listening points, and the summit became a prominent historic site. The ruins of White City, a resort complex along the railway, stood there, and the Great Incline funicular descended from the point toward Rubio Canyon. Included in the Mount Lowe Railway monument area on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, Echo Mountain remains both a historic landscape and a popular hiking destination.
