The Navesink Formation is a Late Cretaceous geologic formation in New Jersey, dating from about 66 to 70 million years ago. Named for Navesink, it consists of greensand, glauconitic marl, and sand and is especially known for fossil shell beds and dinosaur bones. Extending from Sandy Hook to Pennsville, it is generally about 45 to 65 feet thick. In the regional rock sequence, it usually lies above the Mount Laurel Formation and below the Red Bank Formation, with a gap of about 5 million years between the Navesink and Mount Laurel layers. Important surface exposures can be seen at Poricy Brook in Poricy Park and at Big Brook Park, and it has New Jersey’s highest radon gas potential.
