James Bowie, a young South Carolinian drawn by a love of adventure, came to Texas with James Long in 1819. Romance led him to become a Mexican citizen and to marry a Spanish bride in San Antonio, Ursula Veramendi. Later, dreams of fabulous wealth took him to the San Saba region, where he faced an unexpected Indian attack with unflinching courage. He repeatedly raised his arm against the political and military tyrant who threatened the freedom of Texas until he fell among the last defenders of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.
