York River State Park occupies a stretch of the south bank of the York River near Croaker, where a landscape opened as a state park in 1980 also preserves a far older human story. Within it, Croaker Landing has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1987, with archaeological evidence of Native American habitation throughout the Woodland period, from about 1000 B.C. to A.D. 1600. In the colonial era, the area was known as Taskinas Plantation and included a public tobacco warehouse in the 17th and 18th centuries, where local planters stored crops for shipment to England. The site remains significant for both its natural setting and its long record of settlement and commerce.
