Fort Harrison was built by William Henry Harrison, and on September 4, 1812, a small body of United States soldiers, assisted by settlers, made a heroic defense of the fort against Indians. At the time of the attack, the fort was commanded by Zachary Taylor. Both William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor afterwards became Presidents of the United States.
