Old Stone House in Park Slope, Brooklyn, stands as a reconstruction of the seventeenth-century Vechte-Cortelyou farmhouse, a long-working farm beside Gowanus Creek. Its greatest significance comes from August 27, 1776, during the Battle of Long Island, when Maryland troops under Major Mordecai Gist and Lord Stirling launched repeated attacks near the house to cover the American retreat. Remembered as the Maryland 400, the force actually numbered about 260 to 270 men, and 256 were killed in the assaults. Destroyed in 1897, the original house was later archaeologically studied and rebuilt in the 1930s, and today it serves as a museum, community space, and memorial to those who died there.
