Spring Fort Built Before 1782
History
5
Spring Fort stood at the rock spring on Beal's Branch 800 feet south as one of the pioneer Beargrass settlements contemporary with the founding of Louisville. When its commander, Richard Steele, was wounded in an Indian attack, his wife, at Floyd's first fort, seized her baby and rode through the night amid shots from the red men, speeding up what is now Story Avenue, across Beargrass Creek and Lexington Road, and through the fort's hastily opened gateway to the succor of her husband.
