Old Mose was a grizzly bear that became famous for a myriad of depredations and for bedeviling ranchers and hunters around south central Colorado for many years. Known by his distinctive footprint because he was missing two toes on his back foot, he was regarded as the most dreaded grizzly bear in the entire United States. On Saturday, April 30, 1904, he was killed by James Anthony and his partner, Wharton Pigg, after making his last stand in a quaking aspen draw near the northwest corner of Black Mountain, near Salida and Canon City. Weighing over 1,300 pounds, Old Mose was the largest grizzly in the history of Colorado.
