Founded in 1987 in downtown Lowell, Massachusetts, the New England Quilt Museum is devoted entirely to quilting as both practical craft and fine art. The only institution in the Northeastern United States solely dedicated to quilts and the nation’s second-oldest quilt museum, it is especially strong in nineteenth-century New England quilts. After a flood damaged its previous building, it moved in 1994 to the historic Lowell Institute for Savings building, gaining expanded space for exhibitions, storage, events, and teaching. Its work links regional quilt traditions to Lowell’s textile and industrial past, while festivals, exhibitions, and support for documentation projects have helped preserve Massachusetts quilt history.
