Centier Bank: Generations of Family Bankers
Industry
2
The Schrage family's work at Centier Bank grew from a foundation laid by Henry and Walter Sr., then strengthened by Walter Jr., who became president in 1941 and helped build a culture centered on family and community involvement. The bank continued to grow financially through 1972, when Mike Schrage became president, and then expanded into communities across the region and later the state, opening branches in Dyer, Schererville, Merrillville, and Crown Point, moving into Porter County in 1987 and La Porte County in 2004, and later into the Michiana, Lafayette, Fort Wayne, and Indianapolis regions. Even when many banks and financial institutions were closing in the late 1980s and late 2000s, Centier continued to grow because of the strong cultural and financial foundation maintained by Schrage family leadership, which remains committed to keeping the bank independently owned and operated with a promise that it is not for sale and will stay family-owned for generations to come.
