Eastern Point Light stands on Cape Ann at the east side of Gloucester Harbor’s entrance, serving a port linked to fishermen, whalers, and traders since 1616. Planned in 1829 and first erected by 1832, it was rebuilt in 1848 and 1890; the present lighthouse is a 36-foot conical brick tower with a light 57 feet above mean high water and a white beam visible for 20 nautical miles. The station includes a two-story keeper’s quarters built in 1879. In 1880, Winslow Homer lived there, adding an artistic association to this working navigational site. Automated by September 1985, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
