Montebello was the country estate of financier Thomas Fortune Ryan and his wife Ida Barry Ryan, built in 1901 to replace an 1860s structure owned by stockbroker David Groesbeck. The 44-room mansion included a private chapel, two bowling alleys, and an electric elevator. The Ryans' philanthropy included development of Suffern's fire department and buildings for Good Samaritan Hospital and Sacred Heart Church. Ida Barry Ryan lived here until her death in 1917.
