At the site of Cephas Kent's dwelling, adjacent to the Cephas Kent Inn, the First Convention of the New Hampshire Grants was held in 1776. The Dorset Conventions included the meeting of July 24, 1775, when Seth Warner was elected lieutenant colonel of the first Revolutionary militia of the Green Mountain Boys; the meeting of January 16–17, 1776, which created the district's first independent congress; the meeting of July 24–25, 1776, which voted to defend the cause of the United American States; and the meeting of September 25–26, 1776, which voted to form a separate district, or state.
