Equinox Mountain, the highest peak in the Taconic Range and southern Vermont’s second-highest point, rises nearly 3,000 feet above Manchester and stands out for its great topographic prominence. A modern 5.2-mile toll road completed in 1947 replaced an earlier 1860s route and made the summit a destination, later adding a hotel that opened in 1950 and closed decades later. Joseph George Davidson assembled thousands of acres on the mountain and eventually gave them to the Carthusians, who opened the Charterhouse of the Transfiguration in 1970 and now operate the road and summit viewing center. The mountain also supports communications facilities, a long-running hillclimb, and nearby early wind-power experiments.
