Dr. Salem Baranoff, a philanthropist and highly respected naturopath born in Kiev, Russia, in the 1880s, graduated from the American School of Naturopathy in 1921 and in 1945 purchased the Safety Harbor Sanitarium, an 18-acre health facility with five mineral springs, renaming it the Baranoff Health Resort, now the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa. He advocated a holistic program of proper diet, exercise, proper thoughts, and adequate rest, and as an active community leader he bought land for a new library on 2nd Street North in 1946 and donated land for the American Legion building on Main Street and 9th Avenue South. He died in 1977 at age 96. A majestic live oak was named in his honor in 2004 for his impact on Safety Harbor's culture and community; that same year it was added to a national registry of oak trees maintained by the Live Oak Society of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation as Registry Number 4760. With a girth of about 20 feet and an estimated age of 300 to 500 years, it is believed to be the oldest live oak in Pinellas County.
