The Charles Grant Ramsey family was photographed on the front porch of their home on this site facing Greentree Road around 1908, with Charles Ramsey, his wife Amelia Mohlman Ramsey, and their five daughters, Dora, Eva, Marie, Mildred, and Emma. The house was built around 1870, later razed in 1963, and had been built by Charles's father, John Ramsey Jr., who inherited part of the family land after the death of his father, John Ramsey Sr. Charles and Amelia, both born in 1865, were lifelong residents of the Borough. Charles's grandparents, John Ramsey and Mary Fullerton, came from Tyrone County, Ireland, to Pittsburgh in 1818, and John later bought a 125-acre farm along what is now Greentree Road. John Jr., the first Ramsey born in the United States, was born and raised in Green Tree, as was his wife Elizabeth Frew. Amelia's parents, Henry and Wilhelmina Mohlman, were born in Prussia and immigrated to the United States in 1855; Henry operated a blacksmith and wagon-making shop at Greentree Road and Western Avenue. Early census records list Charles Ramsey as a farmer and later as a storekeeper. From 1896 until his death in 1937, he operated the Ramsey store in Green Tree, a store built in 1869 by his brother James Ramsey. After James died in 1883, his wife Maggie ran the store until 1896. The building had originally stood on the other side of the road and was later moved and turned onto a new foundation, an engineering feat for its time. The store had one of the first telephones in Green Tree, housed the Green Tree post office for many years, and served as a gathering place where community members debated the issues of the day. The Ramseys were members of Mount Pisgah Presbyterian Church, where Charles's grandparents were married, and both John Jr. and Charles served in leadership roles there. Charles also served one term as councilman and two terms on the school board, and he was remembered as a devoted resident who knew Green Tree's hills, valleys, people, and growth from farmland to settled district.
