Berkeley Springs State Park in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, centers on warm mineral springs long prized for bathing and drinking. Known in the colonial era for supposed healing qualities, the springs were visited by Native Americans, and George Washington came here in 1748 at age 16. The site became a health resort in the 1750s and remains notable as the only state-run spa in the United States. Its waters feed bathhouses, a public fountain, and the town’s water system. The park’s best-known historic structure, the Roman Bathhouse, was completed in 1815, and the springs continue to shape the town’s identity today.
