George Washington, surveyor for Lord Fairfax, first visited "ye fam'd warm springs" on Mar. 17, 1748. He later brought his family "to try the effect of the waters" in 1768. When "Ye Town of Bath" was incorporated in October 1776, Washington bought this lot and erected a dwelling house, kitchen, and stable, completed on July 10, 1784.
