Patrick Floyd Jarvis Garrett, the legendary lawman credited with killing "Billy the Kid," was born in Chambers County, Alabama on June 5, 1850. His family moved to Claiborne Parish in 1853 and established a large plantation on the surrounding land, where Garrett spent his youth. After his parents died in 1867 and 1868, the plantation was sold to satisfy debts, and at age 18 Pat Garrett drifted west to Texas before eventually settling in New Mexico. Although his achievements as a sheriff became his best-known legacy, he also lived as a cowboy, buffalo hunter, entrepreneur, Texas Ranger, U.S. Customs Inspector, and a visionary whose irrigation project began the widespread cultivation of the Pecos Valley. He was killed near Las Cruces, New Mexico on February 29, 1908, under circumstances never fully understood, and he was buried at Masonic Cemetery in Las Cruces.
