Built in 1802 as a two-story log cabin, the Franklin Post Office in Franklin, Ohio, is the oldest surviving post office in the state and the town’s oldest building. The post office was established on April 1, 1805, when President Thomas Jefferson appointed John N. C. Schenck as the first postmaster, and Schenck’s home served that role in Franklin’s earliest years. Originally located at 310 River Street, the building was moved in 1974 to its present site near 5th and River streets. It is preserved as a historic site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and stands beside the Great Miami River Recreation Trail.
