Bayardo Bar Bombing Victims
"A Forgotten Atrocity"
Military
On 13 August 1975, five Protestants were killed and up to sixty injured in a bomb and gun attack on the Bayardo Bar. The dead were William John Gracey, aged 63; Samuel Gunning, aged 55; Joanne McDowell, aged 29; Hugh Alexander Harris, aged 21; and Linda Boyle, aged 17. The account attributes the attack to a Republican gang led by Brendan 'Bic' McFarlane, identified as an IRA leader. According to the account, the attackers entered the Bayardo Bar, fired machine-gun fire at a member of the door staff and a customer, and then left a duffle bag containing a bomb inside, giving customers no chance to escape.
