An ancient poplar tree at C. G. Hill Memorial Park sprouted on this site before Columbus sailed for the New World and grew to great height and breadth. After being struck by lightning, it decayed to form a hollow center that provided a hiding place for possessions. During the Civil War, a man hid his cow and calf there to save them from Union soldiers. The tree also gave travelers shelter from the rain, and couples called it the "Loving Tree." It long witnessed the weather, nature, and generations of Forsyth County.
