Labrador Hollow Unique Area is a 1,474-acre protected landscape in central New York known for Labrador Pond, Tinker Falls, and a steep glacial valley kept unusually cool by its shape and orientation. Those conditions support mountain-bog plant communities, and 336 acres are freshwater wetlands. Labrador Pond spans 102 acres but is very shallow, while Tinker Falls formed where differential erosion left a 50-foot waterfall and recessed amphitheater. The valley stayed sparsely settled in the 19th and 20th centuries, with some logging and ginseng cultivation. Preservation efforts in the 1970s led to its opening in 1978, making it New York State’s first designated Unique Area.
