Captain J.J. Cureton was an Indian fighter, lawman, and rancher who settled on the Palo Pinto County frontier in 1854 and led neighbors in defending their homes during Indian raids. In 1860 he helped rescue Cynthia Ann Parker, who had been taken twenty-four years earlier by Comanches. During the Civil War he served as a captain in frontier troops, defending northwest Texas from Indians and northern invasion. Camp Cureton, a C.S.A. outpost in Archer County, was named for him. He later served as sheriff of Bosque County from 1876 to 1880, and his grave is on Flat Top Ranch near here.
