Dunderberg Peak is a prominent mountain in eastern California near Conway Summit, on the divide between the Mono Basin and the East Walker River basin. Within the Hoover Wilderness in Mono County, it is the highest point in Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The summit was first called Castle Peak, then renamed in 1878 by a Wheeler Survey party after mines on its northern slope, preserving the area's mining heritage, also reflected in nearby Dunderberg Mill. Shaped by Pacific weather systems rising over the Sierra Nevada, the peak's alpine environment brings severe high-country conditions. It remains a protected wilderness landmark above the eastern Sierra's basins and passes.
