Lord Stirling Park in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, is a large county park along the upper Passaic River floodplains, where swamps, marshes, meadows, fields, brooks, and forest preserve part of the former Glacial Lake Passaic landscape. The area has been inhabited for thousands of years, and archaeological sites connect it to Lenape civilization. Named for Revolutionary War general William Alexander, Lord Stirling, whose estate once included this land, the park also contains his surviving manor in an unopened section. Its main public areas are the Somerset County Environmental Education Center, notable for opening in 1977 as the first solar-heated public building in the United States, and the Lord Stirling Stable equestrian center.
