French troops under Le Comte De Rochambeau encamped on this site on August 29, 1781, while traveling to meet Gen. George Washington in the campaign that led to victory at Yorktown. In Virginia, American independence was assured by the defeat and surrender of Lord Cornwallis' British forces on October 19, 1781. The troops returned and encamped here again on September 9, 1782.
