Chambers County was created on December 18, 1832, from Creek Indian cession land and was named for Dr. Henry C. Chambers of Madison County, a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1819 and the legislature of 1820 who was elected U.S. Senator in 1825 but died en route to Washington. County government was organized in 1833 by Judge James Thompson of Jefferson County. The first officers were Nathaniel Greer, sheriff; William House, clerk of the circuit court; Joseph J. Williams, clerk of the county court; and Booker Lawson, John Wood, William Fannin, and John A. Hurst, commissioners of roads and revenue. The permanent court site was selected by Commissioners Thomas C. Russell, James Taylor, and Capt. Baxter Taylor. A log courthouse was built here in 1833, replaced by a brick structure in 1837, and used until the present courthouse was erected in 1899. LaFayette, the county seat, was formerly known as Chambersville and Chambers C. H. (courthouse).
