Sinking Creek Valley Cluster is a protected natural area in Virginia’s Jefferson National Forest, north of Newport, recognized as one of the forest’s Mountain Treasures for its scenic, recreational, and watershed importance. Centered on Sinking Creek Mountain and Johns Creek Mountain, it exemplifies the Ridge and Valley landscape shaped during the Paleozoic era and includes part of a continental drainage divide. Sinking Creek flows through farms and pastures, then turns rough near Newport and disappears underground near the New River, while three covered bridges survive along its course. The area is also notable for rich Appalachian biodiversity, especially salamanders, and for historic mountain travel routes that connected the valley to regional trade.
