Old Sunbury Road was one of the longest vehicular thoroughfares of post-Revolutionary Georgia. Laid out in the early 1790s, it ran from Greensboro by way of today’s Sparta, Swainsboro, and Taylor’s Creek to Sunbury, a town and port on the Midway River in Liberty County. The route was noted for its elevated course and small number of stream crossings. As Sunbury, once a leading Georgia port, declined in commercial importance, the road lost its arterial significance, though many stretches of the early route remain in daily use.
