Port Wine
Industry
Port Wine began in early 1850. By 1851 surface mining had declined, but hydraulic mining brought new life to the area. In 1863 Port Wine was described as a religious and sober town. The town had a post office and a Wells Fargo Express building, and it maintained an active ski, or “snow shoe,” racing club that competed against other mining towns in the area.
