The Texas School Book Depository in downtown Dallas evolved from a nineteenth-century commercial site into a seven-story warehouse and later one of the most closely examined places in modern American history. Official investigations concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald fired from a sixth-floor window there and killed President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Originally part of land owned by John Neely Bryan, the property later housed the Rock Island Plow Company and was rebuilt after a 1901 lightning strike in Commercial Romanesque Revival style. Preserved from demolition, it became county offices and the home of the Sixth Floor Museum, remaining inseparable from the national memory of the assassination.
