In downtown Dallas, the former Texas School Book Depository became a major site for interpreting the assassination of President John F. Kennedy because of its direct connection to November 22, 1963. Originally built in 1901 and long used for commercial purposes, the building was restored by Dallas County after years of debate over its future. The museum opened in 1989 to place the assassination, Kennedy’s presidency, the aftermath, official investigations, Lee Harvey Oswald, and enduring conspiracy theories in broader historical context. It has since developed extensive archival and oral history collections, including important assassination films, and remains a leading center for public education on the event and its legacy.
