Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village near New Gloucester and Poland, Maine, was founded in the early Shaker movement, with its origins most fully traced to 1782, and it survives as the last active Shaker community in the United States. It grew rapidly in the early nineteenth century as a working religious commune with a meetinghouse, dwellings, shops, a mill, and farmland. Its 1794 meetinghouse and other historic buildings, including the Central Dwelling House, remain important parts of the site. The village also preserves major collections through its library and museum, protects extensive land through conservation agreements, and continues both public worship and Shaker religious life.
