The Third Infantry Division of the United States Army, known as the Rock of the Marne, is remembered for honorable service in World War I, where it fought in the Aisne, Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, St Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Champagne campaigns and earned 2 Medals of Honor; in World War II, where it served in Algiers-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Anzio, Rome-Arno, Ardemmes-Alsace, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe and earned 37 Medals of Honor; in Korea, where it took part in the CCF Intervention, 1st UN Counteroffensive, GGF Spring Offensive, UN Summer-Fall Offensive, 2nd Korean Winter, Korea Summer-Fall 1952, 3rd Korean Winter, and Korean Summer 1953 and earned 11 Medals of Honor; and in the Persian Gulf, where it served in the Defense of Saudia Arabia, Liberation and Defense of Kuwait, and Operation Iraq Freedom and earned 1 Medal of Honor.
