Theodore "Ted" Tampary and his wife Ellen established the original Flora-Bama on the state line after Florida traded two miles of white beaches and Ono Island to Alabama for construction of the Perdido Pass Bridge. Built in 1964, the business was planned to open on July 4, 1964, but a mysterious fire delayed it until August 1, when Ted and his sons, Constantine "Connie" and Anthony "Bubba," opened the lounge and package store. The Tampary family fostered camaraderie among people of all ages and walks of life. After Joe Gilchrist bought the club in April 1978, he added live music that became part of its lasting legacy. Through fire, flood, and hurricane, the Flora-Bama has continued serving sailors, senators, students, and its local community, including through annual fundraising events.
