Chicago, Illinois, was the site of the Aeromotor Windmill Company, the first to build all-steel windmills. Thomas Ferry and Laverne Noyes founded the Aeromotor Company in 1888 and began manufacturing metal windmills. Through many experiments, Mr. Perry discovered that a steel blade with a concave surface was 87% more efficient than wood blades. This technological advancement proved highly successful and helped drive the conversion of windmill manufacturing from wood to steel. This windmill was manufactured in 1936 and was used near Wiggins, Colorado, to pump water for cattle.
